Saturday, February 14, 2026 Today was up and down! Turns out the extremely cold weather ruined the tankless water heater even though we took measures to drain all water from the pipes – oops! Therefore we could not offer any showers – bummer!
However, we proceeded with everything else – handing out sandwiches, blueberry muffins, hot chocolate, coats, sleeping bags, fleece throws, socks, toiletries, fingernail clippers. But even more importantly, we were able to have more opportunities to pray and talk with people!
One couple came to the table – the woman was wearing a black toboggan that had gold lettering I LOVE JESUS. I quipped ‘I love your toboggan!’ We continued talking about life stuff. Then they revealed they wanted to get married. I asked ‘where are you getting married?’ They didn’t know where. I responded ‘I am an ordained chaplain – you can get married right here!’ We left it with them going to get their marriage license and then will perform the ceremony sometime in warmer weather.
Lastly, a man came asking for help in paying his storage unit fee. He did not want money, just wanted to know if we could pay the fee directly so he could have access to his tools and clothing. I discussed the request with another Board member -we agreed it would be a good and worthy expense and fits within the purpose of the Shower Ministry. I took the man into the shower room, paid the bill and then cleared the ministry debit card from the account. He put his head on my shoulder and wept openly thanking me multiple times. The love of Jesus Christ expressed in a very meaningful and practical way – I suspect more meaningful than anything else we had to offer.
It was a GREAT day!
